WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Red Flags: Warning Signs to Watch For
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Be alert to organisations that are evasive about staff checks, reluctant to share policies, or dismissive of your questions. Red flags include staff who cannot provide proof of DBS checks, lack of clear safeguarding policies, poor communication with parents, high staff turnover with no explanation, children appearing anxious or uncomfortable, unsupervised access to children, resistance to parent visits or observations, no designated safeguarding lead, outdated or expired credentials, and unprofessional conduct or boundary violations. Any of these signs warrant serious concern and further investigation before entrusting your child to their care.

It’s the everyday steps an organisation takes to prevent abuse, neglect, bullying or exploitation, and to act quickly and properly if there’s a concern — especially when working with children or adults at risk.

Anyone working regularly with children should have an Enhanced DBS check with a Children's Barred List check. This is the highest level and shows whether someone is barred from working with children. Standard or Basic DBS checks are not sufficient for roles involving regular contact with children. For regulated activity (such as teaching, coaching, or unsupervised care), the Enhanced check is a legal requirement.
Ask to see their DBS certificate and note the issue date (ideally they should be renewed every three years). Request proof of safeguarding training completion. Check if they're registered with a professional body or accreditation scheme. Ask for references from other parents or organisations. Reputable providers will have no issue sharing this information—in fact, many now use digital verification systems like ours that allow instant proof of credentials via a secure digital passport.
Listen carefully without leading questions and take what they say seriously. Write down exactly what your child said in their own words, noting the date and time. Contact the organisation's designated safeguarding lead immediately to report your concern. If the concern involves the safeguarding lead or you're not satisfied with the response, contact your local authority's children's services or the NSPCC helpline (0808 800 5000). Trust your instincts—it's always better to raise a concern that turns out to be nothing than to ignore a potential risk.
Yes, absolutely. Online provision requires the same checks and safeguarding training as in-person care. Additional considerations for online safety include secure video platforms with appropriate privacy settings, clear policies about recording sessions and data protection, guidelines for appropriate online conduct and communication, and parental oversight options. Reputable online providers should have specific digital safeguarding policies that address online risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and data security.
Both must meet the same fundamental safeguarding standards, including Enhanced DBS checks for all staff, designated safeguarding leads, and written child protection policies. However, schools are regulated by Ofsted and must follow statutory guidance (Keeping Children Safe in Education). After-school clubs and activity providers are not regulated, although must register with Ofsted if caring for children under 8, and only need follow their sector's regulatory body requirements - if there is one! The key is that any organisation working with children—whether in education, sports, arts, or care—must prioritise safeguarding with the same level of rigour. Don't assume that because a club operates via introduction from your school that it's automatically held to school standards—always verify independently.
